    Dirt Cups of Halloween Past

No matter the time of year, Halloween treats inspire a certain type of joy and nostalgia. You or your kids may have grown up enjoying these Halloween dirt cups around October. The classroom party was never really complete without them!

Maybe your classmates would bring in these tiny plastic cups layered with pudding, “dirt” Oreo crumbles, and gummy worms peeking through the crumb soil. Perhaps they even added a tiny cookie headstone — Milano cookies work well — for the full graveyard effect. One thing’s for sure: this simple, themed Halloween dirt cup dessert was both joyful and delicious. And as an adult, it absolutely holds up!

    Easy to Make Dirt Cups

Traditionally, Worms in Dirt uses chocolate pudding as a base. Pudding, however, isn’t necessarily for everyone — the texture and temperature can be off-putting to some, especially when combined with the textures of cookie pieces and gummy candy.

Now, instead of pudding cups, you can make dirt and worms ice cream using Hijinx, half & half — you can use milk, milk alternatives, or water for an icier textured ice cream), cocoa powder, Oreos, and gummy worms. Simply blend Hijinx ice cream powder with warm half & half and cocoa powder. Let your mixture rest for 30 minutes at room temperature, then stir in your Oreo crumbles, then gummy worms. Freeze for 3-6 hours in an airtight container, and then you’re ready to scoop and enjoy.

With this recipe, a classic pudding parfait is transformed into a crowd-favorite ice cream sundae with the toppings already mixed in. So for those who aren’t into the pudding cups, this alternative may give them the opportunity to enjoy this delightful treat.
